A New Year and a New Occupy Protest for Direct Mail
I started 2012 on a good note. I got my new calendar magnet on the fridge door and spent the holidays catching up on marketing news and statistics that relates to promotional magnets and magnetic mailers.
The problem was that it didn’t take long for my mood to change, and I got fed up with the way traditional direct mail got thrown under the bus. Unfortunately for you, I’m using this posting to vent. You can think of this as my one-man occupy protest.
What started all the ruckus? I’m glad you asked. I was in one of the Linkedin groups Magnetic Attractions participates in. I was reading one of our posts on how pizza operators can use our pizza magnets, and saturation mailing campaigns to attract new customers. Magnetic Attractions has been doing pizza marketing for over 20 years, so we know what we’re talking about.
What set me off was a post after ours in which our magnet mailers were called old-school and out dated. Of course he went on selling the virtues of mobile marketing as the way to attract customers today. Now, I’m no Luddite. I love technology, and don’t go anywhere without my Smartphone. My problem was that I hate how products like our BigMag Magnetic Mailer are considered out dated and ineffective just because they are tradional, and God forbid, they are a printed product.
Well guess what? No matter how you spin it, pizza operators (and small businesses in general) still order our BigMags in droves. That’s because they deliver results. Historically, our BigMag mailers have an 8% – 11% coupon redemption rate, and really boost business immediately after they deliver.
BigMags also do other thing that social, mobile and online videos can’t do. They can get delivered to every household in the United States (if you wanted to do that). You can definitely deliver a saturation mailing to every household in your delivery area for about $.015 each in postage.
I know, we’ve all heard the staggering stats about the growth of social, online email and mobile marketing, and I’m not saying it’s mailing a BigMag or nothing. What I’m saying is you need to incorporate a BigMag mailer to ensure reaching everyone in your target market. After all…
- *While approximately a little over 50% of the US population is on Facebook, it means a little under 50% of the population currently isn’t. There are some states where Facebook penetration is just 40%.
- *Yes. 77% of the population has broadband Internet service. It also means that 23% don’t.
- *Smartphone usage is big, and continues to grow. But right now, only about 35% of the population have one.
- *20% is considered a good email open rate.
- *53% of the population will watch online videos in 2012. That means 47% will not.
- *8.5% unemployment – How many have had to give up their Internet and iPhones to make ends meet.
But, every household and apartment building has a mailbox
Plus, I’m sure everyone reading this knows of someone who doesn’t have a Smartphone, broadband service or checks their Facebook page once a week. But, they do eat pizza. Magnetic Attractions has a magnet or magnetic direct mail products that can reach them. We can also print QR Codes on your mailer that can lead readers to a world of online content. See, Magnetic Attractions might be old school, but we’re not Luddites either.
